Flagstaff Hill Village and Tales of the Shipwreck Coast Sound & Light Show

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village overlooks the infamous Shipwreck Coast on the Great Ocean Road of Victoria. Situated within an hour’s drive of the Twelve Apostles at Warrnambool, Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village showcases the dramatic history of the Shipwreck Coast where 180 ships have come to grief and the Great Ocean Road experience. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is Australia’s most awarded maritime heritage precinct, combining the 1870’s charm and heritage of the maritime village with the spectacular Sound and Light show – ‘Tales of the Shipwreck Coast’.

BY DAY Flagstaff Hill’s Maritime Village is set on 10 acres and reflects the pioneering atmosphere of an 1870’s coastal port. Visit the Sail Maker’s Loft, Village Blacksmith, Shipping Agent, Ship Chandlers, Bank of Australasia, Printer’s workshop, and much, much more. Guided tours are available at no charge (bookings essential). Experience first-hand the perils of early sea travel as you explore The Gravesend Theatre, Interactive Displays, and the Relics & Treasures recovered from various shipwrecks in the Great Circle Gallery.

A key feature of the Great Circle Gallery is the priceless Minton earthenware statue, the Loch Ard Peacock, Australia’s most valuable shipwreck relic. Transported from England to Melbourne aboard the clipper the Loch Ard in 1878 for display at Melbourne’s Great International Exhibition of 1880, the life-sized Loch Ard Peacock was washed ashore in a packing crate, just days after its namesake ran aground.

BY NIGHT As night falls, step inside the village to experience dramatic stories of Australia’s rich maritime history, told vividly through the multimillion-dollar Sound and Light Show Experience. The new show, released in 2017, combines three great stories. ‘Tales of the Shipwreck Coast’ takes you on a journey through the ages. From local Aboriginal stories to Warrnambool’s colourful whaling past, then to events that gave our coastline a reputation that inspired fear and trepidation among mariners.See the village come to life and experience the stories told through projections onto a nine-metre water wall.Shows are suitable for all ages. Bookings Essential.
