ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE – Broken Hill Bruce Langford Visitors Centre



 

Visitors will experience the following:

• Museum (self-paced) tells RFDS history, through information panels, exhibits and two interactive displays.Dedications to our founder The Very Reverend John Flynn and his successor Rev McKay, Alfred Traeger as well as our Doctors, Nurses and Pilots. Museum exhibits include,early communication, navigation and medical equipment. There are two interactive displays (especially good for children) one an audio-visual display simulating an emergency call to this Base in 1950’s era,another a visual map display;

• Theatrette (44 seats) see a 13 minute RFDS video of day-in-the-life of medical & aviation team delivering primary healthcare and aero-medical retrievals to communities surrounding Broken Hill;

• Guided Tour: (approximately 15-20 minutes) an experienced tour guide takes you behind the scenes, to view the Communications’ Room where flights are coordinated and monitored. You will also learn about Medical Clinics and see maps that depict South Eastern Section’s footprint. The tour includes going upstairs into the aviation hangar, from the observation deck you overlook the area where heavy maintenance is carried out by aviation engineers servicing King Air aircraft. This is a great photo opportunity of the aircraft;

• Gift shop: Support RFDS make a purchase from the well stocked gift-shop where you will find RFDS branded merchandise. Includes, postcards, books, clothing, hats & caps, souvenirs and much more. Proceeds from the sale of merchandise assist the replacement of aircraft and to medically-equip them. Tax deductible Donations gratefully accepted, with options for giving or membership can be discussed with our team.

We suggest timing your visit to our Base during the working week (Mon- Fri) to get a better appreciation of the behind-the-scenes operations. We recommend allowing (i.e. 1 hour) to enjoy all sections of the tourism experience.

RFDS Broken Hill Bruce Langford Visitors’ Centre open 360 days (closed 5.5 days) i.e. Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years day, Australia Day, Good Friday, and half-day ANZAC Day.

Trading hours (Central Standard Time) as follows:

1. Monday to Friday: 9.00am to 5.00am first guided tour commences 10.00am, thereafter on the hour until last tour 4.00pm;

2. Saturday and Sunday: 10.00 to 3.00pm first guided tour commences 11.00am, thereafter on the hour until last tour of the day 2.00pm.

3. Public holidays: we trade most public holidays 10.00 to 3.00pm however maybe subject to change please contact the visitors’ centre to confirm.
