PUFFING BILLY RAILWAY

Step into a timeless world of wonder with Australia’s favourite steam train: Puffing Billy, located in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges and only one-hour east of Melbourne.

Built in 1900 to serve the local communities that lived in the hills, carrying anything from passengers to timber, livestock, potatoes and plants, the Railway is now a major tourist attraction that invites visitors to come and experience a century old tradition every day of the year, except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 500 volunteers.

Take in the magic of steam train travel from the moment you arrive, with the sight of the historic locomotives being prepared for departure at the station, the smell of steam billowing out of the vessel’s chimney and the evocative sound of the train’s whistle.

Before long, get your ticket clipped by the friendly conductors and jump on board the open sided carriages for a serene ride over the hills, across the iconic timber trestle bridges, down the valley and into the forest on the original mountain track between Belgrave and Gembrook.

Escape the crowds and enjoy the simplicity and beauty of the region from Lakeside Station, where you will travel to Gembrook and pass through the stunning views of Wright Forest and rich open farmland. Enjoy lunch in Gembrook, the small charming town at the end of the Puffing Billy line, where you can buy a fresh pie or sausage roll from the local bakery or pack a picnic to bring with you on the day.

Alternatively, you can travel first class in the luxurious, fully enclosed dining carriages on the daily Steam & Cuisine Luncheons, and experience what true luxury travel was like in the 1920’s. The Steam & Cuisine Luncheon train departs from Belgrave Station daily (except Victorian Public Holidays) and arrives at Lakeside Station located in Emerald Lake Park.

Once you arrive, be sure to spend some time checking out Emerald Lake Park's attractions, including various leisurely walking trails, the picturesque Emerald Lake with paddle boats, the Model Railway and Puffing Billy’s soon-to-be Lakeside Visitor Centre coming in 2020. Then, enjoy a mouth-watering dessert, tea or coffee as the Steam & Cuisine Luncheon train starts its return journey back to Belgrave Station.
