NATIONAL WOOL MUSEUM
The National Wool Museum experience is more than just wool. As a vibrant gathering place between the historic waterfront and central Geelong, the National Wool Museum is a place to create, collect and share stories. Here wool, fibre, textiles, history, science, fashion, handcraft and art come together. Temporary exhibitions and programs combine lifelong learning, hands-on exploration and entertainment for people of all ages. Museum Highlights: THE 1910 LOOM: The centrepiece of the museum, and utilising the Jacquard punch-card system, the Axminster Jacquard gripper-type carpet loom is one of history’s first computers. Over 100 years old the fully operational carpet loom produces the museum’s exclusive Manor House Rug, available for purchase through the Museum Shop. THE WOOL HARVEST: Explore the re-created shearer’s hut, watch kelpies in action and learn about Australia’s wool boom and bust. FLEECE TO FABRIC: See, hear, smell, and feel the wool as it transforms from raw fleece through scouring, combing, spinning and weaving to become a finished fabric. Try your hand at carding, weaving, or machine knitting. KOMET SOCK KNITTING MACHINE: Originally displayed as a static object, this 1960s Komet sock knitting machine was restored to working order in 1995. The finished socks are sold through the Museum Shop, but hurry, as it can only knit one sock every seven minutes! REMINISCENCE COTTAGE: Explore the world of yesteryear in a hands-on, safe, and engaging space. Our award winning Reminiscence Cottage program is a sensory experience recreating Australian home life from 1930-1950. MILLION DOLLAR BALE: The record price made headlines in over 45 countries. Auctioned at the National Wool Museum on 11 January 1995, this sample is from the first bale of wool to measure under 14 microns and record the highest price for a single bale of wool at that time.
